Vision
The vision of the group is ‘To conserve and enrich Salhouse Broad as a bio diverse environment, and to promote a sense of custodianship felt by the local community now and in generations to come.’

Mission
Friends of Salhouse Broad will assist in the preservation and improvement of the environment at Salhouse Broad by carrying out conservation activities such as tree planting and scrub removal; delivering a voluntary ranger service; providing educational and recreational opportunities for local people and visitors, and co-ordinating planning for the future of the area with local and private sector partners.

Objectives
  • To undertake conservation tasks such as tree planting, scrub removal, sedge bed raking and bracken pulling, with volunteers. A selection of conservation days will be held per year.
  • To maintain access at the Broad by clearing and surfacing pathways.
  • To undertake educational events such as guided walks, boat trips and fun days, for visitors and the local community. A variety of events will be held per year to cater for a range of interests.
  • To provide educational interpretation at and around the Broad.
  • To raise funds through such events to pay for the running of the group.
  • To ensure visitors are aware of and use local amenities, services and business.
  • To provide a voluntary ranger service at the Broad to collect litter, maintain its appearance, prevent vandalism and car crime.
  • To identify opportunities for sustainable local business and development.
  • To work with partner organisations such as the Parish Council, Broadland District Council, BTCV and the Broads Authority to co-ordinate planning and service provision at the Broad.
  • To hold 4 meetings per year with speakers and an opportunity to discuss matters concerning the broad.

    Beneficiaries
The beneficiaries of this group will include people from both the local community in and around Salhouse, and wider community from Norfolk to National and international visitors. This will include all age groups, ethnic groups and social backgrounds. Membership of the Friends of Salhouse Broad is open to all. Members and visitors will benefit as follows:

    Members
Those who wish to become members of the Friends of Salhouse Broad will be given the opportunity to have their say in what happens at the Broad at the Annual General Meeting held in March. Quarterly Meetings offer members and local people the chance to get together, discuss matters and ideas concerning Salhouse Broad.
Members will become more environmentally aware and this will in turn promote a sense of custodianship of the local environment. Members will also be able to carry out practical conservation tasks at the Broad, which will assist physical fitness as well as create team building and social skills.
The opportunity to help in the organising and carrying out of events will also promote good community spirit and involvement.

    Visitors
All visitors to the Broad including tourists from outside the community and local people will benefit from the presence of the group. The improvements to the habitats and increased species diversity, which will be achieved through conservation work carried out by the group, will enrich the visitor’s experience. Improved interpretation will also educate the visitors about the area and its wildlife. Visitors will be able to join the physical conservation tasks undertaken by members, thus receiving the same benefits. This may encourage them to become a member, or perhaps set up a similar group in their area. Attending events will educate people, increase environmental awareness, as well as encourage fun and open-air recreation in the countryside.
